Mall of America Getting Bigger
Official groundbreaking for expansion of The Mall of America on March 18, 2014 marks the beginning of the massive full-scale construction project.
When completed, the 850,000 square-foot, $325 million expansion will include a JW Marriott luxury hotel, office tower, new high end retail space, new dining options, a new event space similar to the current Rotunda and underground parking.
The JW Marriott will be a 14-story, 342-room hotel with direct access to the Mall. It will feature a full-service restaurant and bar, grand lobby with a lobby bar, fitness center, pool, and extensive meeting space that includes a 15,400 square-foot grand ballroom. It also will offer an executive lounge and a two-level, 600 car underground parking garage.
The Mall of America expansion project will also be adding three levels of retail with more than 50 new stores to complement the unique mix of current retailers.
A 180,000 square-foot office tower is also a part of the Mall of America’s expansion plan. It will be home to a mix of national and international business tenants that will be located atop a new multi-level parking garage, providing direct access to the Mall.
“Mall of America is an iconic retail and entertainment destination known around the world,” said Tom Lander, vice president at Mortenson Development. “We are pleased to be the development and construction partner for this important expansion and once again work with the Mall as it continues to focus on delivering a world-class experience here in Minnesota.”
Construction has begun and anticipated completion is scheduled for August 2015.
